Ingredients

For the patties

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for leaner patties.
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder For added flavor.
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 pound mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour Used to thicken the gravy.
  • 2 cups beef broth For the base of the gravy.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to mix until everything is well combined.
  • Shape the mixture into four oval patties, making sure they are evenly sized for even cooking.

Cooking

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties onto the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms, cooking until the onions become soft and the mushrooms are browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onion and mushroom mixture and stir to coat. Gradually add in the beef broth while stirring continuously until the mixture has thickened, about 5 minutes.
  • Return the cooked patties to the skillet and let them simmer in the gravy for an additional 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve the Salisbury Steak hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

For a thicker gravy, mix a tablespoon of cornstarch with water and stir it in while cooking. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
